1. Binary packages

1.1. Windows

Like TortoiseSVN, we recommend turning off the indexing service on the working copies and repositories, and excluding them from virus scans.

The following installers can be used from Windows XP onwards:

• TortoiseHg with Windows Explorer "shell" integration all-in-one installer with TortoiseHg 2.2 and Mercurial 2.0 (alternate download: Bitbucket / CodePlex)

• Mercurial-2.0.1 (32-bit msi) / Mercurial-2.0.1 (64-bit msi), needs admin rights to install.

• Mercurial-2.0.1 (32-bit exe) / Mercurial-2.0.1 (64-bit exe), does not need admin rights to install (InnoSetup based).

• Mercurial-2.0.1(32-bit py2.6) / Mercurial-2.0.1 (64-bit py2.6), installs Mercurial source as Python modules and thus requires Python 2.6 installed. This is recommended for hgweb setups and extensions with non-standard dependencies.

• cygwin can install Mercurial, but the cygwin abstraction layers introduces a potential source of error and is not really recommended.

Most of the above installers are from thg-winbuild, which has nightly builds of Mercurial and TortoiseHg.

1.2. Mac OS X

• Mac OS X packages (old versions may require adding export LC_ALL=en_US.UTF-8 and export LANG=en_US.UTF-8 to your ~/.profile)

• fink - 1.2.1

• macports: install with 'sudo port install mercurial' - 1.9 (on 2011-07-04)

1.3. Linux (.deb)

• Debian

  • Debian sid (unstable) - 2.0

  • Debian wheezy (testing) - 2.0

  • Debian squeeze (stable) - 1.6.4 (1.8.3 available as a squeeze backport)

  • Debian lenny (oldstable) - 1.0.1 (1.3.1 available as a lenny backport)

• Ubuntu

  • Ubuntu Hardy - 0.9.5 (1.0.1 available if you enable backports)

  • Ubuntu Intrepid - 1.0.1

  • Ubuntu Jaunty - 1.1.2

  • Ubuntu Karmic - 1.3.1

  • Ubuntu Lucid - 1.4.3

  • Ubuntu Maverick - 1.6.3-1

  • Ubuntu Natty - 1.7.5-1ubuntu1

  • Launchpad PPAs (carrying packages for Hardy, Lucid, Maverick and Natty)

    • Releases - 2.0

    • Stable snapshots - daily snapshot of stable DeveloperRepos (warning: untested code)

    • Snapshots - daily snapshot of unstable DeveloperRepos (warning: untested code)

Mercurial (from 1.0 onwards) is packaged for Debian-related distributions as two packages, mercurial and mercurial-common - you only need to care about this if you are downloading .deb files for manual installation - otherwise, APT dependency handling will take care of this for you when you install mercurial.

1.4. Linux (.rpm)

• RPMforge: packages for RHEL 5 and CentOS 5; install using yum install mercurial - 1.5

• Mandriva: install with urpmi mercurial - 1.7.2

• Fedora - latest version is available within few days after release, install with yum install '*mercurial*'

• Fedora Projects EPEL for RHEL and CentOS 5: 1.3.1, install with yum install '*mercurial*'

• openSUSE - latest version is available shortly after release in the devel:tools:scm repository

• Ark Linux - 1.6.2

• OpenPKG - 1.4

An RPM package can be built from a Mercurial source repository with contrib/buildrpm. It has currently mostly been tested on Fedora.

1.5. Linux (others)

• Arch Linux - 2.0

• Gentoo ebuild: install with emerge mercurial - 1.4.1/1.5 (1.7 in unstable)

• T2 SDE - 1.7.2

• Slackware 12.2 - 1.0.2

• Optware cross compilation ipk - latest for Python 2.4 and 2.5

1.6. Solaris

• sunfreeware.com - SPARC/Solaris 2.6-10 packages, x86/Solaris 8-10 packages - 2.0

• OpenCSW: solaris package mercurial-2.0.1, sparc/solaris, x86/solaris.

1.7. AIX

• Mercurial and supporting RPMs, for AIX 5.2 and later - 2.0

1.8. BSD

* FreeBSD; use pkg_add for installing - 1.9 (on 2011-07-06)

• NetBSD packages compiled from pkgsrc - 1.2.1

2. Source packages

• Source code of released versions of Mercurial can be downloaded as usual .tar.gz files at http://mercurial.selenic.com/release/.

• The hg-stable repository leads to stable releases - download snapshot.

• The hg repository is the main development repository - download snapshot.

• Check DeveloperRepos for other relevant developer repositories where you can clone the hg source.

After getting the source, continue to UnixInstall or WindowsInstall for help with installing.

3. Using easy_install

This method is not recommended and may conflict with other installs of Mercurial.

Mercurial can also be installed from pypi with easy_install. You will need Python and the C compiler used to build it and easy_install. easy_install might be available in a python-dev or python-setuptools-devel package for your platform or you can grab it from http://peak.telecommunity.com/DevCenter/EasyInstall.

Create a file in C:\Python26\Lib\distutils and call it distutils.cfg
[build]
compiler=mingw32

With the right prerequisites you can install the latest version of Mercurial using:

easy_install -U mercurial
